VMG began as Viking Services in 2005 and was started by the founder as a small business after retiring from the US Army. As a graduate of the 
Uniformed Services University of Health Science (USUHS) and medical subject matter expert with over 30 years experience in military and Special Operations remote medicine, he was initially contracted to provide medical consultations for Department of State contractors.
In 2007, the company was moved to Winona, MN and the company name was changed to Vighter Medical Group.
The word Vighter is a combination of Viking + Fighter + Healer and was inspired by the multiple duties Special Operations medical providers must perform around the world.
In 2010, VMG moved out of its home office to its current corporate headquarters at 111 Riverfront and added its first full time employee. Since that time, VMG has added staff, resources, and a larger suite of offices.
In 2010, VMG received HUBZone (historically underutilized business zone) certification from the Small Business Association.
In May 2011, VMG was verified through audit and examination as a service disabled, veteran owned small business (SDVOSB).
